Acceptable Recyclables

The City of Plano accepts the following items:

  • Aluminum, tin and steel cans
  • Chipboard/boxboard (cereal and shoe boxes)
  • Glass jars, containers, dishes, drinking glasses and vases
  • Junk mail, mixed office paper, school papers and non-metallic paper gift wrap
  • Newspapers, magazines and catalogs
  • Food and beverage cartons
  • Paper grocery bags 
  • Phone books
  • All plastic bottles, containers and lids including a stamped Number 1 - Number 7, excluding Styrofoam 
  • Shredded paper - place in sealed clear plastic bag 
  • Small corrugated cardboard boxes - should be clean, dry and placed loosely in cart 
  • Milk and food containers
  • NEW - Caps on plastic items like water bottles, detergent bottles and milk jugs may be left on the bottle. Plastic and metal caps on glass bottles should be thrown away.

Items NOT Accepted:

  • Landscape waste (grass clippings, tree limbs)
  • Aerosol cans
  • Adult and baby diapers
  • Aluminum foil
  • Batteries (see where to recycle separately here)
  • CDs/DVDs
  • Ceramics (dishes, drinking glasses, vases)
  • Facial or toilet tissue
  • Light bulbs/fluorescent tubes
  • Metallic and cellophane gift wrap
  • Mirrors
  • Paper towels
  • Plastic bags (can return to the grocery store)
  • Plastic containers used for motor oil, antifreeze or other hazardous materials
  • Plastic wrap or plastic toys
  • Self-sticking notes (due to glue)
  • Styrofoam (packaging, peanuts)
  • Trash bags
  • Wire hangers
  • clothing or shoes

When in doubt, throw it out!
