With the summer season officially at a close, we are ready to usher in the autumn months with our new Discover Recreation series. Each week we will explore a certain theme as it pertains to Plano’s Recreation Division. From going behind-the-scenes at Haunt Jaunt to getting a sneak peek at our new online class registration program, you will learn how much this division does year round to keep Plano happy, healthy and having fun.
Our series starts at the heart of the Parks and Recreation Department: Oak Point Park Nature & Retreat Center. Located at 5901 Los Rios Blvd. and overlooking Oak Point Park & Nature Preserve, this 7,000-square-foot facility opened in October 2015 and is home to Plano Parks and Recreation administrative staff.
Many of our outdoor adventure and education classes take place near and around the center. With Oak Point’s lake just behind the center, the grounds are an ideal spot for kayaking, family camp outs, night hikes, fishing lessons and other nature activities.
Working among such beautiful natural scenery certainly has its perks, but it does not come without hard work and professional maintenance. From mowing and mulching to pruning, planting, aerating, and weed pulling, our staff and contractors care for roughly 30 different species of flowering plants, shrubs and trees. The grounds are also home to a colorful mix of native plants and ideal pollinators, meaning Oak Point Park Nature & Retreat Center is home to hummingbirds, butterflies and solitary bees as well.
Inside, visitors can learn more about the area’s natural landscape and wildlife through a fun and interactive exhibit. Aside from the administrative offices, the center also features 2,400 square feet of meeting space, complete with serene lakeside views. With a spacious kitchen for accommodating catered events, the retreat side is an ideal spot for special gatherings such as weddings, baby showers, parties, corporate retreats and business meetings.
So bring the family (and your camera) for a visit and explore our home! Oak Point Park Nature & Retreat Center is open 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday.
