Suggested School Routes

Why develop a suggested School Route Program?

Maps for elementary schools within the Plano Independent School District and the Frisco Independent School District have been developed that show the suggested route to school for school children coming from the surrounding residential community. A copy of each school map can be obtained from the City by calling (972) 941-7152. Maps are also sent home with students at the beginning of each school year.

Who developed these maps?

Suggested school route maps are developed by the City Transportation Engineering Division with input by the Plano Independent School District, Frisco Independent School District,  and Public Safety Department. Suggested school routes take into account physical barriers such as railway lines, freeways and high traffic volume streets. They are also designed to take advantage of low volume residential streets, stop signs, traffic signals, adult school crossing guards, pedestrian bridges, and existing sidewalks.

How are the suggested School Route Maps being distributed?

The staff at each elementary school have copies of the maps for distribution to parents and students. Copies of maps can be obtained by calling the Traffic Engineering Division or most elementary school offices.

When using crosswalks with Adult Crossing Guards:

  1. Obey the directions of the Crossing Guard.

  2. Don't run across the street - always walk.

  3. Be alert for traffic - drivers sometimes fail to obey the Crossing Guard stop signs.

  4. Don't ride bicycles or skateboards across the street - walk them.

Which are the most important Bicycle Rider’s Rules?

  1. Keep your bicycle in good mechanical condition (tires, chain, brakes).

  2. Obey all traffic rules and signs - always give proper hand signals.

  3. Walk your bike across busy intersections by using the push button to activate the pedestrian signal.

  4. Be sure the roadway is clear before entering.

  5. Always ride single file and watch for opening car doors.

  6. Ride without passengers. Most bicycles are built to carry one person - YOU!  and you alone.

  7. If you must ride your bike at night, be sure your headlight and reflectors are in good condition.

  8. Select the safest route to your destination and use it. Avoid busy intersections.

  9. Yield the right of way to pedestrians.

  10. Always wear a bicycle helmet.
