GREENING THE LEGENDS AT CHASE OAKS
In the fall of 2011, property manager Twyla Hendricks offered residents at The Legends at Chase Oaks apartment community the opportunity to recycle. An eight-yard recycling container was placed on-site so plastic containers, cans, cardboard, newspapers and magazines, and other materials could be diverted from the local landfill.
Fairfield Residential, the Legend’s property management company, fosters green living and recycling reflects its commitment to the environment. Present in the community but not so evident to residents are green attributes such as motion detectors, low VOC paint, Fairfield Elite carpet, eco-friendly cleaning products, annual irrigation audits, faucet aerators, and the option to pay rent on-line.
The management team reports that recycling is catching on, and residents appreciate this amenity as it enhances their chosen green lifestyle.

PRESTONWOOD COURT IS GREEN
In April 2011, Prestonwood Court-Senior Living took their vow to provide exceptional senior living for their residents to another level. They chose to go GREEN.
Richard West, Director of Facilities, was looking for ways to reduce the amount of their waste disposal. The City of Plano Commercial Recycling Division was contacted and proposed the facility add single-stream recycling to help reduce the amount of trash going to the landfill. .
A training session, which outlined the procedures and goals for implementing recycling, was held for staff and the janitorial company that serviced the facility. These guidelines ultimately provided a 25% reduction in waste output, which diverted 1.29 tons from the landfill. In addition, the recycled products created 0.914 tons which saved a monthly monetary value of $91.98, totaling $1,103.76 per year.
To date, the residents have embraced the changes and have created a Green Team which meets once a month to discuss ways to improve their recycling effort.
Congratulations are in order for the success Prestonwood Court Senior Living created in being environmentally responsible.

GREEN RESIDES AT SENIOR HOUSING COMMUNITY
Carrie Acosta, service coordinator at Pioneer Place Senior Housing – Phase II, fully embraced the opportunity to begin recycling when the major addition to the original facility built in 2006 was completed.
The community offers transportation, social outlets, a garden, library and other venues for getting residents engaged in their community. Pioneer Place Phase II can now add recycling to its amenities. Residents were provided a recycling kick-off presented by a commercial recycling coordinator from the City of Plano who detailed what material could be recycled in the single-stream recycling program. Those who participated in the April 19 kick-off were provided with plastic recycling totes to assist with collecting and transporting recyclables to the exterior 8-yard recycler. Newspapers, magazines, aluminum cans, plastic containers #1-7, and more can now be recycled versus being sent to the landfill. To this green senior community, conserving earth’s resources never gets old!

GREEN LIVING WITH POST LEGACY
Plano residents living in single-family homes have the convenience of curbside recycling, but that is not available to most multi-family communities. In 2010, Post Legacy Apartment Homes, located at 5741 Martin Road, began single-stream recycling after partnering with the City of Plano’s Commercial Recycling Division. This urban luxury 384-unit community includes website information dedicated to educating its residents on the benefits of conserving natural resources.
With their single-stream recycling program, residents are allowed to recycle plastic bottles, glass, mixed paper, newspaper, cardboard, and aluminum in the same container. According to the manager, Rachael Vincent, “This makes it very convenient for the residents.” In their monthly newsletter, staff and residents are encouraged to be environmentally conscious and have sustainable practices. Since the implementation of the single-stream recycling program, trash has been reduced by 2.25 tons per month. The residents can rest assured they are making a positive impact and living a greener lifestyle.
