North Texas is in a flood plain and is susceptible to flooding. Flooding usually occurs during heavy rains and can become extremely dangerous if no warning is given. Water is an extremely powerful force and during flooding has the ability to take away vehicles, mobile homes, and do heavy damage to property. The elderly and individuals who are not strong swimmers are extremely vulnerable to drowning during times of flooding. Downed power lines pose a serious threat during floods when they come in contact with water.
Preparing for a flood:
• If the area you live in is likely to flood make sure your home is elevated when built.
• Make sure the water heater, furnace, and electric panel is away from potential flooding water.
• Install check valves in sewer traps to prevent floodwater from backing up into your home.
• If flood is impending construct barriers (levees, beams, sandbags, floodwalls) to stop floodwater from entering the complex.
• Make sure you have an emergency storage of living essentials and also take into account that power will most likely be down in the case of a flood (have candles).
While flooding:
• Seek higher ground. Do not wait for instructions.
• Avoid areas susceptible to flash floods such as creeks, canals, drainage channels.
• Be fully ready to evacuate. If you have a chance; bring any outside furniture inside as it will become a projectile during a flood. Move most essential materials to attics or upstairs.
• Turn off main valves and switches, if instructed to do so. Never use electrical equipment if you are wet.
• Try to avoid walking through water as it takes only six inch deep water to knock someone off their feet.
• Never try to drive a flooded road, and if your car dies get out of it immediately and seek shelter as soon as possible.
After a flood:
• Stay away from floodwaters and do not allow your children to play in floodwater.
• Be wary of roadways that may have been weakened during a flood and the water has merely receded.
• Stay away from downed power lines.
• Return home only after the authorities have said it is okay.
• Get rid of all food that is contaminated by floodwater.
• Make sure the sewage system running your home is intact; if it is not it can cause a very serious situation.
