Winter
Weather in North Texas can cause a very
dangerous environment in which many people may suffer harm or
even death. More commonly, these deaths and injuries are the
result of improper heater use which cause fires, traffic accidents, and overexposure
and overexertion during cold and icy conditions.
Have Knowledge of News Weather Jargon:
- Winter Weather Advisory - cold, ice and snow are
expected.
- Winter Storm Watch - severe winter weather such
as heavy snow or ice is possible within the next day or two.
- Winter Storm Warning - severe winter conditions
have begun or are about to begin.
- Blizzard Warning - heavy snow and strong winds
will produce a blinding snow, near zero visibility, deep drifts and
life-threatening wind chill.
- Frost/Freeze Warning - below freezing
temperatures are expected.
Winter
storm tips:
- Make sure your emergency supply kit is stocked
and winter storm ready.
- Buy rock salt to improve tire gripping ability as
well as catalyzing ice melt.
- If you have a fireplace make sure you have excess
firewood stored in an area that you can keep dry and away from heat.
- Equip your household with fire extinguishers and
insure your family knows how to use them.
- Avoid being outside in the weather for extended
periods of time as this will lead to overexertion and/or overexposure.
