Seniors & the Disabled

When emergencies happen specific needs for seniors or those with disabilities need to be taken into account, and their emergency plan and emergency kit needs to be specially tailored to accommodate those needs.

Remember:

Mobility

  • If you or a family member have troubles with physical movement, have a neighbor or close friend that knows the situation and has instructions to check on them if there is an emergency.
  • Due to limited mobility; make sure that there is a network of people that will keep in contact with you or your family member.

Medication & Medical Supplies

  • Make sure any special medication is kept in a separate supply that will last at least 7 days.
  • Some medical equipment is electrically powered; in an emergency you are going to need alternate sources of power.  Take the time and talk with your medical supply company and see what they recommend as a backup power source.

Care

  • Personal care attendants may be unavailable in the time of an emergency. You or your family need to ensure that proper arrangements have been made with caregivers or you are familiar with your care facility’s emergency policies
  • Make sure all service animals have a current registered tag.

Additions to the Emergency Kit and Go Bag:

  • Make sure a manual wheel chair is accessible and listed as an essential item for your emergency kit
  • A device or whistle to signal for assistance
  • Vital medications
  • Medical Phone numbers of importance for those with specific needs
  • Make a list of your medications, medical conditions, insurance information, allergies, and have your insurance cards available. Keep one copy with you at all times, and give the other copy to someone else for safekeeping.
