The
water supply may become unavailable during times of an emergency, and
you need to be prepared to have water for at least three days.
Recommendations:
- Estimate about 1 gallon of water for each person in your family per day
- It is recommended that you change your water supply every 6 months
- Water needs to be
kept in very tightly sealed plastic containers and labeled with a date
when they were placed in storage. DO NOT USE MILK CONTAINERS
- Keep a small bottles of iodine tablets or unscented liquid bleach for purifying water
If
water supply has been compromised:
- Bring water to a rapid boil for 5 minutes and allow it to fully cool before using
- Add 8 drops of
unscented liquid bleach per gallon of water and shake or stir. Let it
stand for 30 minutes before using. You will smell chlorine but the
water should taste normal.
Do
not forget other sources of water around your home. For example,
if you run out of water you can always use water from your hot water
heater or toilet reserve, NOT THE BOWL.
