 Energy:  What are the Costs?

We know the financial costs of energy.  From gasoline purchases to utility bills, we see how energy use drains our wallets every day.

Energy use has other costs as well.  U.S. energy use alone makes up a quarter of global energy consumption, and each year our power plants and vehicles pump more carbon dioxide into the air.  This impacts our health and Texas' economic vitality.  Increased incidences of asthma and allergies due to poor air quality result in missed work days, missed school days, and decreased business production.

What Can I Do to Save Energy?

Save energy and money at home!  Choose an action from the list below, and watch your bills decrease: photo of CFL bulb

Replace traditional incandescent light bulbs with energy-saving compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) or light emitting diode (LED) bulbs.  CFLs use one-third of the energy that incandescent bulbs use, and LED bulbs use only one-fifth of the energy from incandescent bulbs.
Caulk and seal seams around doors, windows and outlets to avoid air conditioning or heating losses.  This simple action can save you 20% on monthly utility bills.

Install programmable thermostats in your home.  This will make your home climate more comfortable, and you can program the settings to save energy while you are away from home.

Adequately insulate your attic space, and make sure that duct workis sealed against air loss.  North Texas builders suggest between 18 and 2 inches of insulation for home attic spaces.

Drive a fuel efficient vehicle and carpool wherever you can.
