Texas Finally Has Statewide Television TakeBack Recycling Law
Recycling advocates and businesses celebrate as Governor Perry signs the “TV TakeBack” bill into law

Austin, TX – Environmentalists, local government leaders and recycling businesses have praised Texas legislators for passing a bill that will have TV manufacturers take back and recycle obsolete televisions, keeping toxic materials such as lead and mercury out of Texas landfills and water sources. Governor Rick Perry signed Senate Bill 329 into law—unlike in 2009, when Gov. Perry vetoed a similar bill. Advocates count this as one of the rare environmental victories during the 2011 Texas Legislative Session. Read more

Manufacturer take-back programs:

Effective September 1, 2008, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) mandated that all computer manufacturers selling products in Texas must provide free producer take-back programs.  These regulations only apply to computer monitors, CPUs, mice and keyboards.  Manufacturers are not required to take back any other electronics for free, although several may do so for a fee.  Visit www.texasrecyclescomputers.org for more information.

Before you recycle your old computer with its manufacturer, make sure you wipe out all information on the hard drive. Contact your manufacturer for proper instruction sto wipe out a hard drive. Manufacturers are not responsible for information recovery or security.  Also, be aware of the manufacturer's standards on social, environmental and financial responsibilities.  Make sure the company is partnered with a recycler that uses safe practices for its workers, does not send any computer parts to a landfill, and does not send hazardous materials overseas.
