Literacy for Life
Plano Public Library System's Literacy for Life (LFL) program is seeking volunteer tutors to work with the program's adult students. There is no greater gift than to help another adult learn to speak and read in English. Currently, there are over 100 students on the waiting list who must wait to be matched with trained tutors in order to participate in the program.
Tutor information sessions only take an hour and are designed to introduce potential tutors to the LFL program and give potential tutors enough information to decide whether to enroll in a workshop. The tutor training workshops focus on instruction, patience, and understanding cultural differences and familiarize tutors with LFL program materials utilized.
Once individuals become trained, tutors are asked to volunteer to work with students a minimum of two hours per week for six months. For a listing of upcoming tutor information sessions or training workshops click here.
If you are interested in becoming a literacy volunteer, contact Sharon Lozier at LFL@plano.gov, at the Gladys Harrington Library or call 972.941.READ (7323) for additional information.
Library Links with Seniors
LLS serves senior citizens in Plano through volunteers who present programs to the residents of local care homes.
The programs are presented once a month for 30 - 60 minutes at each care home. The volunteers make up their own programs and often share among themselves. Programs are based on library materials; i.e. books, poetry, short stories, etc. Volunteers also meet monthly to share ideas, programs and challenges. For more information call 972.769.4200, Susan Rhoads, librarian coordinator.
