Library Links with Seniors (LLS) is a worthwhile program that offers a great volunteer opportunity. Sponsored by the Plano Public Library System with assistance from Friends of the Plano Public Library, its goal is to bring library programs to senior care homes. LLS operates from Schimelpfenig Library.
LLS volunteers gather for lunch to discuss new programming ideas.
Programs of 30 to 60 minutes in length are presented once or twice a month at senior care homes by volunteers who have received orientation from the LLS staff member and have observed several programs being presented in care homes. Volunteers create their own library-based programs using books, poetry, short stories, magazine articles or tapes of current interest.
Volunteers serve senior care homes (assisted living facilities, nursing homes, independent living facilities and neighborhood care homes). The number of attendees may range from 3 to 36. Volunteers meet monthly with the LLS staff member to share ideas, materials and concerns. Library staff assist volunteers with materials for their topic as needed.
With more volunteers, more seniors can be reached. If you are living far away from your own family members, or if you have an interest in visiting with or getting to know senior citizens in the community, this program is for you.
