Tutors: Since 1991, Literacy for Life (LFL) tutors have been volunteering through the Plano Public Library System to give one-on-one tutoring to adults who need to improve their English reading and writing skills. We need new tutors to help meet the needs of the increasing numbers of students requesting these services.
Requirements:
- Have completed high school
- Have a good command of the English language
- Attend a Tutor Training Workshop (a suggested donation of $20 covers materials)
- Provide a 6 month commitment of 2 hours instruction a week (a flexible schedule set up with your student)
- A good sense of humor and a healthy dose of patience is invaluable!
(Please note, the Literacy for Life program does not supervise volunteer tutors and therefore does not provide reports for projects or service requiring the documentation of tutoring hours.)
How to get started: First, enroll in a 1-hour prospective tutor information session. This session will introduce you to the Literacy for Life program and give you enough information to decide if you want to take the next step toward becoming a literacy tutor.
If you decide that becoming an adult literacy tutor is for you, register for a tutor training workshop. This workshop is required for all LFL tutors. (Let us know if you have attended a tutor training workshop from another agency or have literacy tutoring experience.)
Please go to the LFL Calendar page for upcoming dates, and register at 972.941.READ (7323) or LFL@plano.gov.
