Access Newspaper Archive (Available in library only) - Access NewspaperARCHIVE contains tens of millions of searchable newspaper pages, dating as far back as the 1700s.

Ancestry Library Edition
(Available in library only) - An online genealogy service that accesses 3,000 databases containing over a billion records.

Auto Repair Reference Center (ARRC)  Includes information on approximately 23,000 vehicles from 1954 to present; factory drawings and step-by-step photographs; technical service bulletins and recalls issued by the original equipment vehicle manufacturer; wiring diagrams for easy viewing and printing and Quick Tips, a complete guide to vehicle ownership and maintenance.

EBSCOhost 
 Online access to full-text articles from a variety of magazines and journals.  Information in the following areas is available:

  • Academic Search Premier - provides full-text for more than 4700 scholarly publications.

  • Business Source Premier - provides full-text access to more than 8200 journals in business or related fields.

  • Medline - provides authoritative medical information on medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, pre-clinical sciences, and much more. Created by the National Library of Medicine, MEDLINE uses MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) indexing with tree numbers, tree hierarchy and explosion capabilities to search abstracts from over 4,800 current biomedical journals.

  • Military and Government Collection (found under "News") - provides cover-to-cover full text for nearly 300 journals and periodicals and indexing and abstracts for nearly 400 titles. Designed to offer current news pertaining to all branches of the military and government.

  • Regional Business News (found under "News") - provides comprehensive full text coverage for regional business publications. Regional Business News incorporates coverage of 75 business journals, newspapers and newswires from all metropolitan and rural areas within the United States.

  • MasterFILE Premier- a multidisciplinary database designed for public libraries that provides full-text for nearly 2,000 general reference publications.

Facts on File -  Includes reference databases on science, history, multicultural subjects, geography, health, and career guidance. A database of printable forms and curriculum resources for grades K - 12 is also available.

Gale Databases
–  Contain information on a variety of subjects including:

  • Associations Unlimited - contains information on 460,000 international, and U.S. national, regional, state, and local nonprofit membership organizations in all fields, including IRS data on U.S. 501(c)
     non-profit organizations..
  • Biography Resoure Center - provides biographical information on more than325,000 people, including journal articles from over 270 periodicals.
  • Business & Company Resource Center - brings together company profiles, brand information, rankings, investment reports, company histories, chronologies, and periodicals. Search this database to find detailed company information and industry news and information.
  • Health and Wellness Resource Center - provides information on Fitness, Pregnancy, Medicine, Nutrition, Diseases, Prescription Drugs, etc. from magazines, journals, newspapers, dictionaries, and directories. This material is intended for informational purposes only.
  • Literature Resource Center (LRC )- designed to meet the research needs of undergraduate and high school students. Covers more than 120,000 novelists, poets, and other writers.
  • Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center - a one-stop source for contrasting opinions and information on social issues.

LearnATest  Offers online practice tests for civil service, firefighter, emergency medical services, law enforcement, GED, GRE, TAKS, ASVAB, real estate, SAT, TOEFL, TASP, and other occupations/subjects.

LitFinder (Available in library only) – Indexes 800,000 poems and provides full-text access to 100,000 poems. The database also provides thousands of full-text short stories and essays.

netLibrary   A collection of books, including downloadable audio books, available electronically through the Texas State Library's TexShare program. TSL has access to 28,000 titles, including the latest information technology titles, reference essentials, business and economics resources, best-selling fiction, and more. To access netLibrary, users will need to create a free account at any of the PPLS library locations. Once an account has been set up, netLibrary can be accessed from home, school, or office.

NoveList 
A tool that helps readers find authors and titles on subjects and themes similar to their favorite works of fiction. The database offers access to over 125,000 titles.

One More Story (available in library only)  The Plano Public Library System is pleased to announce One More Story.  One More Story is an online library of the best of children's classic and contemporary literature.  It can only be accessed in the library. Through a simple point and click process, children can choose a book, see the illustrations and have the book read to them whenever they want. One More Story also offers the I Can Read It mode for beginning readers. Clicking on the "I" button (in the upper right hand corner) mutes the sound, allowing the child to read the book.  If a word is unfamiliar, the child can click on it and hear that word spoken by the narrator. This is available for every word in each book in the One More Story library.    In order to enjoy One More Story, children will need headphones.  You may bring them from home or they may be purchased at any library.

ProQuest Historical Newspapers™--The New York Times   A unique full-image archive that brings you the entire historical run of the The New York Times, the definitive voice of American journalism since 1851. It offers complete coverage from 1851 - 2002.

ReferenceUSA by infoUSA   An online database containing profiles of more than 13 million U.S. businesses and 120 million U.S. residents. The database is useful for compiling mailing lists and offers the capability to limit searches by zip code, city, state, sales, number of employees, and other options.

Rosetta Stone: The Plano Public Library System is proud to make available Rosetta Stone's English Language Learning, Levels 1 & 2. The purchase of this database was made possible by grant funds received from the Collin County Adult Literacy Council, and local Wal-Marts and Sam's Clubs. Thank you for your support!

Please note: Rosetta Stone will no longer be available after July 1, 2008.


Levels 1 & 2 include:

To access this database from the library or wherever there is an internet connection, you must have a valid Plano library card and an email address, and you will be required to register and create a Username and Password. Headphones are available for purchase at any Plano library for $2 per set, or you can use your own. TexShare Databases (A program of the Texas State Library)  This extensive collection of databases gives users the opportunity to access full-text articles in encyclopedias, almanacs, reference books, journals, newspapers, and electronic books. The databases provide information on health, business, biography, genealogy, and literature, in addition to homework help for students.

TypingMaster Online 
(contact any PPLS library for login information) A web-based typing tutor that provides a complete touch typing course for the self-motivated learner. Users can easily assess their typing skills with customizable typing tests. With the advanced Numeric Keypad course you can also learn to enter numeric data much more efficiently. The typing courses in TypingMaster Online are available in English, Spanish, French, German, Dutch and Finnish. 

World Book Online

  • Accurate, authoritative, easy to read articles from The World Book Encyclopedia.
  • Related articles from major newspapers and magazines.
  • Extensive graphic and multimedia enhancements, including photographs, maps, illustrations, tables, animations, and audio/video clips.
