The Plano Police Department Crime Prevention Unit is the evaluation authority for determining McGruff House Exemplary School status. Banners are awarded to qualifying schools per semester. Exemplary status is determined on the first day of the school year and re-evaluated on the first day after winter break.

The McGruff House Exemplary School program is based on the McGruff House programs of participating elementary schools earning points. Primarily, points are earned for the number of McGruff House volunteers participating within a school's attendance boundary. To qualify, a school needs generally one McGruff House participant for every 18 students. Additional points can be earned by the school when Crime Prevention Officers conduct McGruff House training for students at the school. A school can lose points if it falls of out compliance with certain rules of the program. The Safety Chairperson (adult volunteer) for each school receives a monthly status report detailing their school's exemplary statistics.

Almost 100 new participants joined the PISD/PPD McGruff House program during the McGruff House Exemplary School program's first year of existence. The McGruff House program helps children feel safer and has proved to be an effective deterrent to crime. The strength of the program improves dramatically with each new participant.
