Police Officer Duties
Police Officer duties include but are not limited to:
Patrolling their districts, responding to calls for service, conducting preliminary investigations, investigating traffic related incidents, writing reports, pursuing and detaining suspects, and making arrests.
Enforcing traffic and parking laws.
Participating in Community Policing activities.
Working with other police department units as well as other local, state, and federal entities.
Preparing for and attending court appearances.
Participating in mandatory and elective training.
Keeping proficient with firearms.
Assignments Within the Department Members of the Plano Police Department having completed the required probationary period can apply to move to any of the following Units/Divisions:
Court Security Officer Crime Prevention Unit Criminal Investigation Division Emergency Services Response Unit K-9 Neighborhood Police Officers Narcotics Unit Patrol Professional Standards Unit Public Information Officer School Liaison Officer Traffic/Motorcycle Warrant Unit
Promotions
Eligible officers compete by written examination for advancement into supervisory and administrative positions. These positions include Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain.
