“Being a Literacy for Life (LFL) tutor has been one of my more rewarding experiences. I have been working with my student for the past nine months. In that time she has been so impressed with the LFL program, she has convinced others to use the Plano libraries for help in learning the English language. I have witnessed incredible progress in her confidence level, where she is now comfortable enough to go to teacher conferences and has indicated they went very well. We have developed a rapport and a new friendship. LFL tutoring requires dedication, but it’s worth it. I appreciate all the support of the City and especially the LFL staff.” --Paula Casey | Genealogy Put your research skills to good use, help people search for their ancestors. Literacy for Life Literacy for Life (LFL) program is seeking volunteer tutors to work with the program's adult students. There is no greater gift than to help another adult learn to speak and read in English. Currently, there are over 100 students on the waiting list who must wait to be matched with trained tutors in order to participate in the program. Tutor information sessions only take an hour and are designed to introduce potential tutors to the LFL program and give potential tutors enough information to decide whether to enroll in a workshop. The tutor training workshops focus on instruction, patience, and understanding cultural differences and familiarize tutors with LFL program materials utilized. Once individuals become trained, tutors are asked to volunteer to work with students a minimum of two hours per week for six months.
