Cottonwood Creek Greenbelt South

Cottonwood Creek Greenbelt Trail, South
Plano Parks and Recreation is excited to announce we are developing plans for enhancements to the parkland surrounding Cottonwood Creek! This project will ultimately connect the parkland to the existing Cottonwood Creek Greenbelt south of Park Boulevard.

Below are some general FAQs pertaining to this upcoming project. For more information, please email trail system planner, Lance Knox or call 972-941-7473.

Cottonwood Creek South

Q: What will the trail connection consist of?

This trail project is for about 1.5 miles of new trail, which will connect Oxbow Creek Lane to the existing Cottonwood Creek Greenbelt south of Park Boulevard, creating a total of about 2.7 miles of connected trail. The trail will follow the tree line to provide a comfortable experience for all trail users. The photo at the top of this page shows a similar design at the existing Cottonwood Creek Greenbelt Trail.

Q: When will these enhancements be complete?
A: The design for the trail, as well as a corresponding flood study, is currently under development. We hope to have these complete by fall 2019/winter 2020, at which point we can begin the bidding and construction process (which can take about a year to complete). Please bear in mind that, as with all construction projects, the timeline can change.

Q: Why is this project happening?
A: The trail connection along Cottonwood Creek has been planned since the 1980's when it was part of Plano’s Comprehensive Bikeway Plan. The trail is also part of the 2001 Six Cities Trail Plan between the cities of Allen, Frisco, Garland, McKinney, Plano and Richardson, as well as the 2012 Collin County Regional Trails Master Plan. The full planned connection follows the eastern edge of Plano to connect from Richardson to Allen, for a total of 8.5 miles of trail through Plano.

See the current Plano Bicycle Transportation Plan, Six Cities Trail Plan, and Collin County Regional Trails Master Plan, which show this connection.

Q: How is this project funded?
A: This project is funded with City of Plano and Collin County bond funds.

Q: When will the remaining trail along the Cottonwood Creek Greenbelt be constructed?
A: Another section of Cottonwood Creek Greenbelt Trail, to the north, of about 2.6 miles of trail will begin construction in summer 2018. Please see the Cottonwood Creek Greenbelt, North web page for more information. The remaining sections of trail will be designed and constructed as funding is available. Some of the land for these projects still needs to be acquired via purchase or easement.

Q: Will the trail go under Oxbow Creek Lane?
A: The trail will not tie into the area under Oxbow Creek Lane, as the slopes are too steep to meet accessibility requirements without cutting into the creek area and removing many trees.

Q: Will any trees need to be removed as part of this project?
A: The trail will be designed to hug the existing trees along the creek, so at this time, no trees have been identified as needing removal to build the trail.

Q: I’ve heard about something happening at Stoney Hollow Park – is something happening there?
