Plano Suspends Katrina Evacuee Registration
The City of Plano is suspending indefinitely the City’s registration of
Katrina evacuees effective Friday, September 16 at 7 p.m. The Katrina
Support Center, located at 7501 North Independence Parkway, will remain open
as an information center only. The Center will operate from 1 to 5 p.m.,
Monday through Friday; and hours may be reduced based on demand.
The City of Plano has processed more than 2,100 evacuees.
Evacuees can continue to register for assistance through the Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) by phone at (800) 621-3362 or online at
www.fema.gov and through the American Red
Cross at (800) 975-7585.
Plano Shelter Evacuees Receive Housing
The City of Plano announced today it will be ending Katrina evacuee shelter
operations effective this Friday, September 16. Evacuees currently residing
in the current shelters will be moved into longer-term housing beginning
this weekend. Area churches are working with City officials to adopt evacuee
families, providing home furnishings and moving them into their residency.
More than 120 evacuees have taken refuge in three area faith-based shelters:
Christ United Methodist Church, Hunters’ Glen Baptist Church and Willow
Creek Fellowship Church. Several area churches had offered to house
additional evacuees as shelters if that need arose.
The City will continue to pursue more long-term housing opportunities for
evacuees registered and residing in Plano hotels and private residences.
