DAVIS LIBRARY SELECTED AS WORLD WAR I VIDEO DISCUSSION SERIES PILOT SITE
Davis Library was selected from a pool of more than 130 applicants to serve
as a pilot site for “The World War I Years: America Becomes a World
Power,” a six- part film discussion series. Plano’s library is one of 50
nationwide selected to participate in the debut program organized by
National Video Resources in partnership with the American Library
Association. This project is supported by a major grant from the National
Endowment for the Humanities.
“The World War I Years” explores the political and social history of
the United States in the early 20th century. Davis library (7501
Independence Parkway) will begin the series on October 6 and run for
six weeks on Thursdays until November 10.
“We are delighted to have been chosen as one of the pilot libraries for this
unique program focusing on one of the most important periods in American
history,” said Jessica Wilcox, Library Alive! program chairperson and Plano
Public Library System Senior Public Services Librarian.
“This program allows community members to use in-depth information from
documentaries and provide access to the expertise of one of our top local
World War I scholars. A public library is the perfect backdrop for this
discussion because we can offer a full selection of resources for further
study of any of these topics.”
Films discussed in the series include:
October 6: The Road to War. Film: Wilson (The American Experience)
October 13: Over There. Film: The Great War-1918
October 20: Modern War. Film: Shell Shock & Men of Bronze
October 27: The American People in Wartime. Film: One Woman, One Vote
November 3: Peace Making. Film: Wilson (The American Experience)
November 10: After the War-The Turbulent Years. Film: Return to Isolationism
& Lost Peace: Ideals for a United World Fail
Dr. Erik Carlson, manager of Special Collections for the University of Texas
at Dallas will lead a discussion of each session’s award-winning documentary
installment. For details, call 972-208-8000 or visit the Plano Public
