Plano’s Veterans Memorial Art Project Hosts First Community Input
Meeting
A community input meeting for the design of a Veterans Memorial in the
City of Plano will occur Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at 7 p.m. at the
Courtyard Theater, 1509 Avenue H. Plano residents, including veterans
groups, are invited to attend and provide input for the direction and
design of the memorial. The project architect, Art Selection Panel
members, Public Art Committee, Parks and Recreation Department and
possibly Plano City Councilmembers will be present to hear and consider
public input. This is the first in a series of community input meetings
for this project.
This public art project will be in Plano’s Memorial Park on the
southwest corner of Spring Creek Parkway and Custer Road. The Plano City
Council has allocated $40,000 for the design and creation of an art
element of the memorial. A roster-based call will be issued to area
artists for design submissions. The Art Selection Panel will review the
submissions and, with further community input, make a recommendation to
the Public Art Committee for approval. Subsequently it will be
considered by the Park and Recreation Board and the City Council for
final approval. The selected artist will work with the landscape
architect, Michael Kendall of Kendall Landscape Architecture, to design
the art element in the park.
