Plano Libraries Celebrate Library Card Sign-Up Month
Plano Public Library System (PPLS) is joining the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country to celebrate Library Card Sign-Up Month. Throughout September, Plano residents are encouraged to check out what’s new at their neighborhood libraries and to sign up for a PPLS library card. The theme for PPLS’ Library Card Sign-Up Month is “The Smartest Card. Get It. Use It. @your library®.” Ruth DeNamur, Library Card Sign-Up Month Committee chairperson states, “Having a library card is like having a free passport to the world of knowledge!”
Showing a PPLS library card in September will entitle new and existing library cardholders to be eligible to participate in giveaways and to enter the drawing for Barnes & Noble Booksellers gift certificates.
Children can enjoy puppet shows entitled “Gunniwolf,” “Goldilocks and the Three Bears,” “Three Little Pigs,” “What Every Cowpoke Needs” and “Three Billy Goats Gruff.” Dates and times of performances are listed on the PPLS Calendar of Events available at each library and online at www.planolibrary.org.
PPLS librarians recently asked local television celebrities and favorite authors to share memories of their favorite books, when they got their first library card and other early library memories. These photographs and letters are displayed in each of the PPLS libraries during September.
Today’s libraries are dynamic, modern community centers for education, information and entertainment, offering much more than just books. Plano libraries feature audios, videos, CDs, computers, Internet, e-mail access, database resources, homework centers, home schooling resources, book discussion groups, storytimes for children, cultural adult and teen programs, puppets and more. PPLS librarians are ready to recommend materials suitable for various ages and interests, and to teach skills of finding, using, and evaluating information.
Library Card Sign-Up Month was launched in 1987 to meet the challenge of Secretary of Education William J. Bennett who initiated a national campaign to encourage children to obtain library cards. Since then, thousands of public and school libraries join the national effort to promote the use and value of library cards within their communities.
Library Card Sign-Up Month is sponsored by Friends of the Plano Public Library. For information, call (972) 208-8002.
