PLANO LIBRARY LITERACY PROGRAM NEEDS VOLUNTEER TUTORS
Plano Public Library System’s Literacy for Life (LFL) program is seeking volunteer tutors to help teach adult students to read and is offering a one-day tutor training workshop on Saturday, Sept. 30. The workshop is scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Harrington Library.
Literacy for Life is in need of volunteers to work with students. Currently, students must be placed on waiting lists until additional tutors are trained. Tutor training workshops introduce tutors to LFL program materials. Training focuses on instruction, patience and understanding cultural differences.
Once trained, tutors are asked to volunteer to work with students a minimum of two hours per week for six months. Tutor times are flexible and can be scheduled during mornings, afternoons or evenings. The Verizon Foundation has covered the one-time $20 charge for training materials and tutor training.
Literacy for Life’s goal is to improve reading skills and assist adults with tasks in their daily lives requiring higher levels of literacy. The LFL program is aimed primarily toward adults with reading levels fifth-grade or below and also provides educational opportunities for individuals learning to use English as a second language.
Literacy for Life is a member of the Collin County Literacy Council and Dallas READS. The learning center is at Harrington Library, 1501 18th St., Plano.
