Children Enjoy Plano Library’s Book Launch Program
Plano Public Library System’s Book Launch program targets children in first through third grades. A topic is chosen for the monthly program and a librarian reads a story related to the topic to the group. At a recent program, the topic was “The Tropical Rainforest.” During the story, children listened to a tape of rainforest sounds and examined a table full of items produced in or because of the rainforest. Children discussed the importance of the rainforest to the rest of the world, pollution and what can be done to keep our world clean.
Each session concludes with a fun activity to enhance the topic of the day. At this program, children made Rain Sticks like those originally made in Chile. Using paper tubes, aluminum foil, rice, beans and tissue paper, their Rain Sticks sounded just like rain dripping off the towering trees in Brazil.
Book Launch programs are presented monthly September through November and January through May. Children in first through third grades may attend Book Launch at Schimelpfenig Library on the third Tuesday or Parr Library on the third Wednesday from 3:30 until 4:30 p.m. Programs are free. No registration is required. Call (972) 769-4300 for more information.
