Plano Libraries Feature Activities Celebrating Children’s Book Week

The Plano Public Library System (PPLS) will be celebrating Children’s Book Week, Nov. 13 through Nov. 19 with activities designed to celebrate the wonderful world of children’s books.

Each PPLS library will have a bulletin board representing the theme, “More Books, Please!”  Children may pick up a blank picture of an open book at any Plano library; which they may decorate, title and return to a PPLS library for display.  The decorated “books” will appear on a “More Books, Please!” bulletin board throughout November. Each library will have a prize drawing for a brand new children’s book in three different age groups: Pre-K through Kindergarten, first-grade through third-grade and fourth-grade 4 through fifth-grade.

Tacky, the beloved penguin from the Helen Lester books, will visit each Plano library during preschool storytimes:

Monday, Nov. 13 at 10:30 a.m. – Parr Library, 6200 Windhaven Pkwy.
Monday, Nov. 13 at 7:00 p.m. – 2501 Haggard Library, Coit Rd.
Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 10:30 a.m. – Davis Library, 7501-B Independence Pkwy.
Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 7:00 p.m. – Schimelpfenig Library, 5024 Custer Rd.
Thursday, Nov. 16 at 10:30 a.m. – Harrington Library, 1501 18th St.

Children’s Book Week began in 1919 as a unique opportunity to promote the many discoveries children find between the pages of the written word.

Below are some ways families can celebrate children and children’s books:
•    Contribute books to your local hospital’s children’s library.
•    Attend a children’s program at your library.
•    Read out loud a book that takes place in another culture or country.
•    Listen to a children’s book on CD such as Jim Weiss’s recording of “The Jungle Book.”
•    Contribute gently-used children’s books to the annual Friends of the Plano Public Library Book Sale.
•    Make a picture book of your relatives with family stories for your toddler.
