Who issues building permits and why? What does the City’s Environmental
Waste Department do with all the trash they collect? Who determines the
timing of our traffic signals? Why does the City issue municipal bonds and
what’s a day in the life of a Plano policeman like?
If you’ve ever wondered about the inner workings of municipal government, or
wish to become more involved in the decision-making process of municipal
government, then the February 1, 2005 Plano Citizens Academy is for you.
Now accepting applications for February 1, 2005, the free Plano Citizens
Academy promises participants will come away from the nine-week free Academy
with a better understanding of municipal government, how services are
provided and why.
The Plano Citizens Academy is open to residents of the City of Plano, 18
years of age and older. Sessions are held bi-weekly at various City
community facilities, primarily on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.
The Academy is comprised of nine sessions, followed by a graduation
ceremony. Following an introduction by the Mayor and City Council,
participants attend bi-weekly sessions which focus on particular areas of
service, including Budget & Finance, Engineering, Property Standards,
Police, Fire & Public Safety Communications, Public Works, Parks &
Recreation and Libraries, to name but a few. A history of Plano is provided
as well as an overview of Plano’s City Government organization and
operations.
Again, there is no fee for this informative and interesting class.
An online application is available for completion and mail-in, or you can
call to reserve a spot by asking for Ms. Cindy Potrykus, 972-941-7747. The
next session begins February 1, 2005.
