“Que Sera, Sera,” is a song which endeared actress and former Big Band
Singer Doris Day to thousands, but “what will be will be” is not in the
performer’s repertoire when it comes to educating the public on responsible
pet care.
Spay Day USA is the Doris Day Animal Foundation’s (DDAF) national campaign
to promote the reduction of unwanted animals by promoting the many
live-saving benefits of spay/neutering, the most common surgical procedure
on animals to prevent them from being able to reproduce.
In conjunction with national Spay Day efforts, the Plano Animal Shelter is
offering a “nickel neuter” for male cats. On February 28, male cats will be
neutered for only five cents, this day only. Written proof of a current
rabies vaccination is required. If the cat is not current on his rabies
vaccination, one will be given for $10. Plano residents are also required to
register their cats, which is a fee of $7.50 if not already registered.
Plano’s shelter is one of the few in the state to have its own in-house
spay/neuter clinic and professional veterinary services. After neutering,
any discomfort experienced by the animal is minimal and part of the normal
healing process. Most cats will heal very quickly and easily and may attempt
to resume their normal level of activity immediately after surgery.
On Monday, February 28, the Shelter will offer the nickel neutering program
for male cats. Appointments must be made in advance by calling 972-769-4360.
The Shelter is located at 4028 West Plano Parkway, about ¼ mile west of the
Coit Road intersection.
In both cats and dogs, spaying and neutering greatly reduces the risk of
breast cancer and prevents various reproductive tract disorders. It can also
resolve behavioral problems, such as aggression, spraying and outdoors
roaming, where pets can be attacked by other animals or endangered by
traffic. Besides the health benefits, spaying and neutering reduces the
numbers of unwanted cats and dogs, which annually number in the millions.
