Plano’s Senior Center, 401 W. 16th Street, bustled with activity this
afternoon as Plano seniors took advantage of a free health and wellness
fair, yet another example of the on-going recreational and educational
events that keep the Center hopping with non-stop action.
Free blood pressure checks, massages, information on Social Security
benefits, assisted living care and local hospital educational programs was
mixed with information on Police and Fire services, stroke awareness,
on-call transportation services and special telephone services for the
hearing impaired.
“I always attend the Fair,” said Ms. May Delle Riley, who had a sack filled
with information, pens, notepads and assorted samples. “There is always
something new I didn’t know about and I never pass up a chance to get my
blood pressure checked.” With her blood pressure reading in the “normal”
range, a pleased Ms. Riley walked off to meet her friends in the Center’s
cafeteria for lunch.
The free Health Fair is but one of the multitude of ever-changing
opportunities that provide information, education and outstanding recreation
for Plano’s seniors. A look at the June 2005 Calendar of Events reveals
activities focusing on creative writing, pilates, Tai Chi, classic
literature, dance classes, bridge, caregiver support, oil painting, weight
training, knitting, sing-alongs, computer classes, movies and dance night.
Literally a hundred opportunities for ever-changing classes or social events
awaits participants monthly.
An outstanding band, the Kings of Swing, along with great vocalists and
dance groups, keep toes tapping and conversation flowing with various social
events peppered throughout the month. For the sports minded, billiards,
golf, bowling, dominoes, checkers, bocce and golf are offered.
Themed holiday parties, pancake breakfasts, the annual Ms. Senior Plano
Pageant and Senior Olympics, day or weekend trips, or week to two-week long
tours of New England in the Fall, or Branson, Missouri music shows, all
combine for a wonderful slate of activities.
Of course, just visiting with friends, shopping at the in-house Yellow Rose
Gift Shop, stopping in for lunch or to play board games or to quietly enjoy
a book in the Library, all combine to make the Senior Center a place enjoyed
by all.
Also housed at the Center is the Geriatric Wellness Center of Collin County,
offering a multitude of services to persons, including Alzheimer support,
blood pressure checks, diabetic and grief support groups, free lending of
canes, walkers and health care materials.
If you haven’t been to the Senior Center, stop in and have a look. The
Center is open 8am to 5pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8am to 9pm Tuesday
and Thursday and 1pm to 5pm on Saturday. There is no fee to join the Center,
but some classes or events may carry an enrollment fee.
