World Peace Table Tennis Tournament Bounces to Success

Posted: June 6, 2005

“Let The Games Begin!” With these words Mayor Pat Evans signaled the start of the eagerly anticipated Second Annual World Peace Table Tennis Tournament, Saturday, June 4, 2005, at Carpenter Park Recreation Center. Don’t be misled. This isn’t your average game of “ping pong,” but a serious competition with world-class contenders.

The brainchild of the City’s Multicultural Outreach Roundtable Subcommittee #1, the World Peace Table Tennis Tournament recognizes the large number of table tennis enthusiasts of all cultures in Plano, and provides an opportunity for team and individual play at various competition levels. A relatively new sport, the name “ping pong” was coined in 1900 by Englishman James Gibb, after the sound of the hollow balls hitting the paddle and the table. The game quickly spread across Europe and Asia and in 1988 became an official Olympics sport.

To spectators, the only adjective that adequately described the Tournament was “wow!” The bright orange table tennis balls were orange blurs flying so fast and furious it was at times impossible to see them. Players raced back and forth sending volleys of balls to opponents who would slide and race on the slick gymnasium floor to return their shot.

After the national anthem, pledge of allegiance and a prayer for world peace were offered, Mayor Pat Evans was joined by Councilmember Harry LaRosiliere in accepting an appreciation plaque from Tournament organizers, presented to the City of Plano for its support.

Mayor Evans praised the efforts of the City’s Multicultural Outreach Roundtable and the efforts of Sub Committee #1, “on creating recreational activities and identifying facility needs for the many cultural groups in our City. My deep appreciation goes to the Sub Committee,” she continued, “and to the Chairman, Mr. Thomas Tsang, for his vision in bringing our diverse community together at this exciting tournament.”

In addition to increasing recreational opportunities for table tennis, Multicultural’s support for the game of cricket has made Plano a national leader in opportunities provided for this popular game. Also due to the Roundtable’s support, the community is being introduced to several cultures through various Festivals through the year. In October, an International Festival is being planned in Plano.

The City established the Roundtable on September 25, 2002 in an effort to ensure the diverse citizens of Plano have a voice in the City government process. It is an open group for anyone who wishes to serve and be involved.

Six standing committees represent Recreation/Facilities/Services, Diversity and Cultural Affairs, Direct Services to New Residents, City Government Participation, Homeland Security, and Participation.

“I would like to encourage you to consider participating in the Roundtable effort,” Mayor Evans told the audience. “Our meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month and are posted on the City’s website.”

“I commend you as citizens of Plano for coming together at this Tournament to celebrate harmony among all people. Your support and participation in this event proves that world peace is an attainable goal. Thank you for making Plano a great place for everyone to live, work and play!”
