Volunteer of the Month Program Provides City Recognition

Posted: August 10, 2005

When James Edwards received his City Council Volunteer of the Month recognition from Mayor Pat Evans in July 2005, he joined an elite group of individuals who have received the award over the past four years, nominated by and respected by their peers.

The July 2005 Council Volunteer of the Month, James Edwards, has been a leading advocate of the rehabilitation of the Wyatt North neighborhood. He was instrumental in starting a Neighborhood Association and is an active participant in the area Crime Watch Program, continually keeping a watchful eye out for those in the neighborhood in need of help.

He participates with the Sunrise Rotary to clean alleys, paint houses for persons in need, and helps to clean up the neighborhood through City-wide initiatives. He continues to work with various City departments for the good of the neighborhood, including assisting the Plano Police Department in gaining a positive police presence.

James Edwards is the “go to” person when his neighbors need to get things done, and it is his response to community concerns, the welfare of the persons who live in Wyatt North and helping Plano be a better place to live that makes him yet another star in the City’s volunteer recognition crown.

Anyone can nominate a volunteer for City Council Volunteer of the Month recognition. There is no age limit, and the only “requirement” is that the nominee must currently contribute to the betterment of the Plano community through volunteerism.

From students to seniors, past recognitions have included countless volunteer hours spent in organizing food drives, working with the homeless, helping to develop community sports activities, and voluntarily working in church, community, business or neighborhood associations for the good of the community.

If you know an individual who responds to community concerns and enhances the quality of life for others through volunteer efforts, it’s fast and simple to go online to nominate them for recognition.

  • The nominee must currently contribute to the betterment of the Plano community through volunteerism.
  • Nominations must be received by the first of each month.
  • A committee consisting of the Mayor, Mayor Pro Tem and Deputy Mayor Pro Tem will review nominees and make the final selection of the Volunteer of the Month to be honored.
  • Honorees will be recognized at a City Council meeting with a Proclamation and presentation of an exclusively designed gift.
