Plano’s Municipal Center has a new look, thanks to an art presentation to
Mayor Pat Evans and the City of Plano by members of the Plano Art
Association. The mixed-media art piece was presented to the City during the
August 22 City Council meeting in recognition of the City’s support of the
arts.
An abstract work on paper combines the talents of artists Olga and Valeria
Nenazhivina, Olga Tenyakova, Luda Morar, Jennifer Curtiss, Dilan and Nelum
Walpola.
Said Ms. Tenyakova in making the presentation, “Plano attracts more and more
the attention of creative people from around the world. Our painting is a
result of creative people from different countries working together and
uniting their talents.”
The abstract is a combination of collage, ink and paint, measuring 45 x 62
inches. The decision to create the painting was a spur of the moment idea
hatched during a gathering at Nelum Wapola’s home.
“Nelum invited several of us to her home so we could get to know each other
a little better,” said Ms. Tenyakova. “We were having some very pleasant and
peaceful moments sharing our ideas. There were seven artists around the
table, and not everyone could speak English, but art is the common language
and what better way to express ourselves than through art.”
Paper and supplies soon appeared and the spontaneous creation was soon
underway.
“We each started from a little corner and while talking, laughing and
painting, our pictures grew together into a beautiful painting. It is a
happy masterpiece,” said Ms. Tenyakova, “and we wanted to share our joy with
the citizens and the City of Plano. Without any particular intentional theme
the painting shows the universal language that is spoken through art.”
Following gasps of appreciation and applause from the audience, In accepting
the painting on behalf of the City, Mayor Pat Evans expressed appreciation
to the Art Association members for their efforts.
“This is an exquisite piece and so unique!,” said Mayor Evans. “This is
truly a wonderful gift and I thank you for thinking of our City. We accept
this with great gratitude.”
The painting, filled with a myriad of interesting and artistic details not
captured on film, is displayed at the Plano Municipal Center first floor
entry hall. Until a permanent location is determined it will eventually
rotate to other facilities to be enjoyed by the public.
In addition to the talents of the artists, the frame was donated by Amy
Shawa of Art and Frame Depot in Plano.
