Plano is blessed to be spared from the wrath of Katrina and many other major
weather events, but flooding can be a problem for persons in and out of
flood plains regardless of their geographic location across our nation.
Flood insurance can add an extra measure of protection for properties in
flood plains, as well as provide a boost to supplement existing insurance on
properties not in flood plains.
As a participant in the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Flood
Protection Program and the Community Rating System (CRS), the City of Plano
can provide flood protection information, assistance and site visits to
persons owning property in the City of Plano.
FEMA and CRS programs are designed to protect existing and future properties
from flooding and to provide flood insurance at a reasonable cost to
property owners in participating communities. Flood insurance can be
obtained by contacting your insurance agent for information on pricing and
availability.
Since 1980 the City has participated in the FEMA program, beginning
participation in the CRS Program in 1997. While government agencies do not
require persons carry flood insurance, if a property is located in an
identified flood plain, a mortgage lender may require such insurance be
carried.
Flood insurance is available to all properties in the City. A property does
not have to be in an identified flood plain to qualify. The rates for
properties outside designated 100-year flood plains are very reasonable and
cover property from running/rising water damage not covered by a normal
homeowners insurance policy.
The City of Plano can provide you flood map information and maintains
Elevation Certificates for structures in the City. Maps are currently on
file in the Engineering Department at Plano Municipal Center, Second Floor,
1520 Avenue K.
The City can also provide flood protection assistance and make site visits
to properties and residences.
If you would like further information about FEMA/CRS flood insurance,
contact the City of Plano Engineering Department at 972-941-7152.
