The devastation faced by our Gulf Coast neighbors grows with each hour. It
is almost impossible to talk to someone who doesn’t have a friend awaiting
word on a family member, or who is personally experiencing the pain of
awaiting word of a loved one’s location.
As the City of Plano employee team and the Plano community unites in support
of relief efforts for the Hurricane victims, many persons are wondering
where, what and when they can begin contributing to relief efforts.
The City of Dallas is consolidating their sheltering efforts to Reunion
Arena for refugees who are coming into the area. Any requests for shelter
should be referred to that central location.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and response agencies, such
as Red Cross, advise that items not be collected for the relief effort. Past
experience shows that often large quantities of items are donated which are
not needed, or cannot be used, such as electrical and food items where there
is no power for use or refrigeration, battery operated items where no
replacement batteries are available, etc.
Cash donations are preferred, where money can be expended on relevant
emergency items for those in need. Following is a listing of relief
agencies, based on input from FEMA and other sites. This is not an
all-inclusive and does not reflect local relief efforts through local church
or civic organization.
