The Plano Public Library System is issuing temporary Internet cards and
visitor’s cards to people from Alabama, Mississippi or Louisiana to assist
them in gaining Internet access at the Library facilities.
“Computer and Internet access is what persons are most requesting,” said
Library Director Joyce Baumbach. “The temporary Internet card will give them
access to the Internet to contact family and friends, look for a job, look
for housing or to fill out FEMA paperwork.”
For persons who will be here for long periods, visitors cards are being
issued. “This gives them full access to our services,” said Ms. Baumbach.
“We do require verification of a temporary address.”
While numbers are not available, Plano’s Library system has seen an increase
in facility usage as persons staying in the area utilize the Library as an
information and communication center.
The Month of September has been designated national Library Card Signup
Month. Certainly there is no better example of the power of this little card
as it continues to open doors to education, information and relaxation to
thousands of persons in our community every day, now extending a technology
lifeline to our displaced neighbors from the South.
A record 1.4 million patrons visited Plano’s facilities last year with over
2.6 million transactions recorded and 369,931 Internet transactions logged
in.
With Haggard Library due to reopen in the coming weeks after a major
renovation, Plano currently has four outstanding facilities open:
Harrington Library, 1501 18th Street, 972-941-7175
Davis Library, 7501 N. Independence, 972-208-8000
Parr Library, 6200 Windhaven Ct., 972-769-4300
