Yarn Donations Help Seniors in Year-Round Giving

Posted:  July 31, 2006

“Spinning a yarn” takes on new meaning when the large group of dedicated knitters and crocheters at Plano’s Senior Center get together for their weekly lunch, knit and crochet-fest.

There’s plenty of laughter and “story telling” but it’s the spinning blur of yarn balls being fed onto hooks and needles rather than the spinning of tall tales that sets this group apart.

A young child laughs as he wears a fun knitted cap on his way home from a surgical stay at the hospital.  An elderly patient clutches at a multi-colored lap blanket as she’s gently lifted into a wheelchair.  A young infant snuggles in a small pink sweater and cap as her parents take her home from the hospital.

It is estimated over 2,000 caps, blankets and sweaters were donated to patients in local medical facilities in 2005 – all lovingly made by the knit and crochet group at Plano’s Senior Center.

Whoever shows up for the Center’s weekly knit fest enjoys the company of friends and food, with the vast majority of the donated work done in between sessions at home.

It’s the love of “doing” that drives the hands that move so quickly they become a blur as the sounds of clacking of knitting needles and the streaking light from crochet hooks become lost in piles of colorful yarn.  It’s the love of “giving” that keeps the group busy year-round.

While the group’s enthusiasm never fails, the yarn supply quickly does.  Working with donated yarn, there simply can never be enough.  Donations in any amount are always welcomed.

Any type, color and amount of yarn can be used, with even the smallest amounts crafted into accent stripes, afghan squares or other items.  The only type of yarn not acceptable is wool, which cannot be properly washed and sterilized prior to presentation.

If you would like to help these Plano senior crafters “spin a yarn or two,” bring your donation by the Plano Senior Center, 401 W. 16th Street (adjacent Spaghetti Warehouse).  If you’d like to become part of the Knitters and Crocheters, call the Center at 972-941-7155.
