U. S. Population Hits 300 Million Mark: Plano Tops 250,000

Posted:  October 19, 2006

The United States population officially hit 300 million persons on Tuesday, October 17, 2006 according to the U. S. Census Bureau “population clock.”  The “clock” estimates a birth every seven seconds, a death every 13 seconds, and a new immigrant every 31 seconds.

Plano also continues to thrive celebrating the birth of Aidan Cole Victry, January 1, 2006, designated as Plano’s 250,000th resident.  Estimates now place Plano’s population at closer to 256,000 residents, although the “official” population, per the North Central Texas Council of Governments is listed at 252,950 (January/2006).

Demographics plays an important role in the planning of recreational, educational, and infrastructure (road, street, water line) improvements.  Meeting the transportation needs of our maturing population, the recreational needs of our younger population and providing programming/services for our diverse residential/business populations all are guided, in part, by understanding and forecasting our community’s demographics.

The City’s Planning Department maintains on-going and comprehensive U. S. Census data, available to you on line.  Street maps, Zip Code Maps, Population Distribution by Census Tract, Interactive Census Tract Map, Age Distribution by Census Tract, Race/Ethnicity Distribution by Census Tract, Residential Growth Pattern Maps, are but a sampling of Plano’s demographic information available online.
