Plano Television Network Garners Second Emmy Award

Posted:  November 1, 2006

And the winner is…Plano Television Network, Plano, Texas!  There were no jeers, only cheers, when “PTN,” the City’s in-house television network garnered its second Emmy Award, October 21, from the Lone Star Chapter of the National Television Academy.

“Shattered Dreams,” a program aimed at high school students about the consequences of teen drinking and driving, was produced by PTN Video Producer Jason VanSickel, his second-Emmy-winning video production for the Network.

“It is an honor to bring back-to-back Emmy’s to Plano,” Mr. VanSickel said.  “I consider myself fortunate to be working with a talented group of professionals who helped me produce this award-winning piece.”  The production was made in cooperation with the Plano Youth Advisory Commission, Plano Police Department, Plano Fire Department, Signature Towing, Care Flight and Plano Independent School District.

“We are competing with two top ten markets in the nation, Houston and Dallas, as well as many other talented producers in the state,” said PTN Executive Producer Kurt Ugland.  “To be recognized for our programming is quite an honor.”

VanSickel’s “Shattered Dreams” also recently garnered the “Platinum Best of Show” award at the 2006 Aurora Awards, an international competition recognizing excellence in the film and video industries.  PTN earned six Aurora Awards, including a “Platinum Best of Show” for Video Producer Ana Gonzalez (“Portrait of a Hero: Russell A. Steindam”); two “Gold Awards” for Mr. VanSickel (“Shattered Dreams”: Editing Category, and “Sherley General Store.”); with two “Gold Awards” presented to Video Producer Temple Muse for “Graphic Design Compilation” and “Special Effects: Animation/Compilation.”

City Manager Tom Muehlenbeck, a long-time champion of PTN programming remarked, “PTN pushes its creative team to bring quality programming and relevant information to the homes of our citizens.  When industry leaders recognize our talent, it verifies for us our PTN team knows how to tell Plano’s story in a riveting and memorable way.”

PTN has garnered 25 awards in 2006, but recognizes its main objective is to bring information to Plano residents.  “We have a talented group of television professionals who are dedicated to educating our residents,” said Mr. Ugland.  “Meeting this objective is our first priority.”

Since 1999 PTN has received nine EMMY nominations and two EMMY statuettes, making it the most honored municipal television station in Texas by the Lone Star EMMY Chapter.

PTN Offers 24/7 live video streaming, as well as “on demand” viewing of City Council, Planning and Zoning and “Plano Wired” (news magazine) segments.  To get acquainted with PTN and to easily access PTN programming, click here.
