Animal Shelter Open House Saturday, November 11, 2006

Posted:  November 10, 2006

Sushi is a shy but sweet lap cat, with huge gold eyes and a sleek black coat.  She’s altered, house-trained, updated with shots and looking for a home.  Precious loves to talk and her gray and white fur complements any décor!  She is a senior cat who is house-trained, updated with shots…and looking for a lap to call home.

Sushi and Precious are but two of the great animals who have found themselves homeless, dropped off by persons unable to care for them.  They’re confused, maybe still a little frightened, but now optimistic they can find the perfect person or family to give them a chance to share their love of people in a new home.

The Plano Animal Services Open House will be held Saturday, November 11, 10am – 4pm.  The shelter is located at 4028 W. Plano Parkway (just ½ west of Coit Road).  Sushi and Precious will be joined by several wonderful cats, both mature and young, who are looking for new homes.  Playful Harrison, the kitten, Rosey, the spunky ten-year old recovering from minor paw surgery, Pip, the graceful Siamese and several other cats and kittens will be waiting to visit with you.

Okay, what about the dogs (yes, the writer is a cat person).  Labs, Pointers, Jack Russell Terriers, German Shepherds, Pit Bulls, Catahoula Leopards, Spitz, Elkhound, Beagles and any possible combination you can think of for adorable mixed breeds are waiting!

Dutchess is a 5 month Boxer/Lab who was lost and never found.  She’s altered and ready to play.  Shirley is a 2-year old Australian Cattle/Blue Heeler mix.  She cared for her two pups who were also brought in with her, is now altered and is smart as a whip and looking for a forever home.  Myrtle the Beagle is just adorable in every way, overshadowed only by Flappy, an equally adorable Lhasa Apso.  Flappy has the waggiest tail in town and was abandoned by his owner.  This could turn off a lot of animals to people, but Flappy is the happiest fellow around, even though he only has one eye.  He’s ready to for a new start in the loving home he deserves.

Some are abandoned and dumped to run on the streets, some are surrendered by elderly persons in housing transitions, some are “bigger than we thought he’d be for an apartment,” some are just “more care than I wanted to give.”  Whatever the reason, for the dogs and cats at the Plano Animal Shelter, a new lease on life awaits them from the time they are greeted at the door by a loving attentive staff and veterinarian care when needed, to the time they are carried out the door by a new owner.

The Shelter’s Open House is the perfect time to check out the pets, and the facility, even if you aren’t looking for a new four-footed companion.  Special activities will include holiday pet portraits, door prizes, low-cost vaccination clinic, microchip clinic, truck and facility tours, refreshments and more.  Hosted by the Animal Services staff and the dogs and cats at the facility, this is your chance to find out about volunteer activities and to show your love for the prospective pets, maybe even providing a permanent new home!

Adoption fees are $40 for cats and $50 for dogs, with purebreds at $75.  The majority of adoptable pets are current on shots and altered.
