Mr. Ben Thomas was the strong thread that ran through the tapestry of Plano’s historic Douglass Community, helping to hold its position as a viable, historic neighborhood, prominent in Plano’s history. His work as an advocate for maintaining the residential quality of the neighborhood, for removing and improving substandard housing and stopping the encroachment of commercial business stands as a testament to his dedication to the family roots that have held Douglass firm and strong since the 1860’s.
The following photographs were taken at one of Mr. Thomas’ proudest moments, the unveiling of Plano’s 76-foot long Italian glass mosaic art wall, June 17, 2006.
“Tracks of our Past and Future” celebrates the life of the Douglass Community and stands as a permanent testament to the contributions of the African American community in the growth of Plano.
Thanks to the work of Mr. Thomas, residents and the municipal team, Douglass is today a thriving community of over 300 persons, a neighborhood embracing its diverse cultures, preserving its history while ensuring its future.
The photos below show the pride, the spirit, the love of family and friend possessed by Mr. Thomas, and the wall now, in part, becomes yet another of his enduring legacies. The wall is open daily at no charge with parking adjacent the wall, 12th and I Avenue, Douglass Community.
