Police Officer Duties

Police Officer duties include but are not limited to:

  • Enforcing traffic and parking laws
  • Keeping proficient with firearms
  • Participating in Community Policing activities
  • Participating in mandatory and elective training
  • Patrolling their districts, responding to calls for service, conducting preliminary investigations, investigating traffic related incidents, writing reports, pursuing and detaining suspects, and making arrests
  • Preparing for and attending court appearances
  • Working with other police department units as well as other local, state, and federal entities

Assignments Within the Department

Members of the Plano Police Department having completed the required probationary period can apply to move to any of the following Units / Divisions:

  • Court Security Officer
  • Crime Prevention Unit
  • Criminal Investigation Division
  • Emergency Services Response Unit
  • K-9
  • Narcotics Unit
  • Neighborhood Police Officers
  • Patrol
  • Professional Standards Unit
  • Public Information Officer
  • School Resource Officer
  • Traffic / Motorcycle
  • Warrant Unit


Eligible officers compete by written examination for advancement into supervisory and administrative positions. These positions include Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Deputy Chief.
