Renovations to the south side of Carpenter Park are underway.
Renovations to the south side of Carpenter Park are underway. As part of the renovations, a number of existing trees will be removed and replaced with 62 new, 4-inch caliper trees in their place.
These exciting new park updates include a complete renovation of the existing drainage channel that divides the park. The channel will be modified to have a more natural-looking design instead of the current concrete lining. There will soon be four (4) new beautiful ponds with fountains, decorative rock and weirs. To naturalize the banks of the channel, some of the existing trees along the banks need to be removed. There will be 27 new 4” caliper trees that will be planted in place of the trees that needed to be removed in the drainage channel area. By naturalizing this area, these updates will beautify the appearance of the drainage channel and the park.
In addition, all of the athletic fields on the south side of the park are being improved. The soccer fields will be reconstructed to be larger and meet current standardized field size. The new fields will be better suited for leagues and tournaments to be played. In order to achieve the new size requirements for these fields, many of the trees around the fields need to be removed. To help keep visitors cool, bleacher shade structures will be added to each field and 35 – 4” caliper new trees will be planted to replace those that have been removed in the athletic field area. A total of 62 – 4” caliper replacement trees will be added to the park. New restrooms, irrigation system, field lighting and a skate park are also included in these improvements.
Parks staff regret the removal of the existing trees at Carpenter Park but realize it’s necessary in order to achieve a better long term plan for the park and its visitors. The Parks and Recreation Department has planted thousands of trees over the years in its parks, street medians and at public buildings. Trees are important to our City and are not removed without careful consideration. The final result of the renovations at Carpenter Park will provide a much better experience for park goers and sporting events.
