Holiday Happenings from Plano Parks and Recreation

Whether you want to create memories that last a lifetime with loved ones or find unique ways to challenge yourself as we ring in the New Year, we’ve got you covered!

Check out these upcoming activities for kids/family, continuing education, fitness and adults 50+. You can register for all of these activities through our Recreation Online portal. Happy holidays Plano!

Kids/Family

Jingle Bell Hike (ages 3 and older)
Get in the holiday spirit with a hike along the trails at Oak Point Park & Nature Preserve to find the hidden candy canes! After the hike, we’ll have some hot cocoa and write letters to Santa. Register with Course #22983. And don’t forget the flashlight!
When: Friday, Dec. 6 (7-9 p.m.)
Where: Oak Point Park & Nature Preserve, 5901 Los Rios Blvd.
Cost: $9 per family

shutterstock_256226296Guided Nature Walks (ages 4 and older)Explore the beauty and diversity of Oak Point Park & Nature Preserve and learn about the animals and plants that call Plano’s largest park their home.
When:  Wednesday, Dec. 11 (Register with Course #22272)
            Thursday, Dec. 18 (Register with Course #22273)
Where: Oak Point Park & Nature Preserve
Cost: FREE!

Holiday Party Extravaganza (ages 15 and older)
Teens with special needs look forward to this event every year, in which they dress to impress and enjoy an evening of dinner and dancing. Special guests this year include Santa and Miss Plano 2020 Landry Champlin! Participants should bring a new and unwrapped gift to donate to the Plano Christmas Cops. Register using Course #21298 by Monday, Dec. 9 and reserve your spot!
When: Friday, Dec. 13 (6:30-9:30 p.m.)
Where: Crystal Banquet, 6300 Independence Parkway, Ste. B
Cost: $40 (residents), $44 (non-residents)

Lil’ Sluggers Baseball Clinics
Tom Muehlenbeck Recreation Center offers the World Series of baseball clinics for kids ages 2 to 6 with several sessions taking place this month by Texas Sports.
When: Sessions begin on Saturday, Dec. 14
Where: Tom Muehlenbeck Recreation Center, 5801 Parker Road
Cost: Varies depending on class

Family Rock Climbing
The family that climbs together stays together! This two-hour class gives parents the skills necessary to safely climb with their children using the indoor climbing wall at Oak Point Recreation Center. Register with Course # 21487.
When: Saturday, Dec. 14 (noon-2 p.m.)
Where: Oak Point Recreation Center, 6000 Jupiter Road
Cost: $25 for one adult and one child, additional adults or children are $15 each

Nature at Night (ages 10 and older)
See a different side of nature exploring the stars and night sky at Oak Point Park & Nature Preserve! A Texas Master Naturalist will guide your family through the preserve while teaching you about the constellations, how to navigate at night, and the local nocturnal wildlife. Our Nature at Night walks are always FREE! Please register using Course #22831.
When: Friday, Dec. 27 (8:30-10:30 p.m.)
Where: Oak Point Park & Nature Preserve
Cost: FREE!

Continuing Education

Property Protection with Plano PD
You’ve worked hard to acquire your home and property. Now learn from the Plano Police Department how to keep that property safe. Learn how vulnerable your home is to intruders, as well as ways to make it more safe and secure. Register with Course #20666.
When: Wednesday, Dec. 18 (6:30-9 p.m.)
Where: Carpenter Park Recreation Center, 6701 Coit Road
Cost: FREE!

Fitness

Belay Training (ages 16 and older)
Learn the basics of climbing and rope-handling, including tying a figure-eight knot, climbing commands, and belaying. All equipment required to climb is provided. Participants must register in groups of two or more. Parent/guardian must complete waiver for those under 18 years of age. Register with Course #21484.
When: Saturday, Dec. 14 (10:30-11:30 a.m.)
Where: Oak Point Recreation Center
Cost: $15 (residents), $19 (non-residents)

Intro to Weight & Resistance Training
Have you ever been to a gym and felt like a duck out of water because you didn't know where to begin? This class will address how to warm-up, proper form, exercise selection, goal setting, and other key aspects of training. Register with Course #20965.
When: Tuesday, Dec. 17 (7-8 p.m.)
Where: Oak Point Recreation Center
Cost: $19 (residents), $23 (non-residents)

Lou Ann’s WatercolorLearn to express your creativity in watercolor! Lessons include the basics of color, composition, value, drawing and techniques used to finish a satisfying painting. Classes are informal and fun! Register with Course #22256.
When: Dec. 4-Dec. 18 (classes held each Wednesday from 1-4 p.m.)
Where: Sam Johnson Recreation Center for Adults 50+
Cost: $79 (residents), $83 (non-residents)

Pencil Art
This portrait, floral and landscape class explores clay-based, wax, graphite, watercolor, charcoal and pastel pencils. Techniques and surfaces used are interesting and informative. Supplies are furnished your first month. Register with Course #22248.
When: Dec. 4-Dec. 25 (classes held Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon, and Thursday, Dec. 26)
Where: Sam Johnson Recreation Center for Adults 50+, 401 W. 16th St.  
Cost: $75 (residents), $79 (non-residents)

Annual Holiday Luncheon
Join the Sam Johnson Recreation Center staff at Highland Springs Senior Living Community for an afternoon of delicious food and lively music and entertainment! This festive event also comes complete with door prizes and raffle items. Register with Course #22642.
When: Wednesday, Dec. 18 (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
Where: Highland Springs Senior Living, 8000 Frankford Road, Dallas
Cost: $24/person
